The lining of paintings is a process of conservation science and art restoration used to strengthen, flatten, or consolidate paintings on canvas by attaching by means of adhesives a second canvas to the back of the existing one. To this aim, the prospects of the use of ethyl vinyl acetate (EVA) resins in aqueous dispersion applied as an adhesive in a foam form have been investigated in the present study. The key physical properties of the foam have been investigated, with a deep focus on rheological behavior and the drying rate, comparing the results with those obtained using the liquid products that are commercially available. Dedicated mock-ups have been prepared to test the adhesive for the lining process, inspecting adhesion strength, colorimetric properties, and the influence on the possible chromatic and visual alteration of the surface, also looking at the chemical interaction with painting materials and the deterioration after an artificial ageing process. The results obtained clearly indicated that the proposed technology is very suitable for the targeted application, and an EVA water-based foamed dispersion can be used for paintings’ lining, in view of the ease of application, being an appropriate adhesion, no chemical interaction, nor the deterioration of the painting.

These derivative-shaped bands are correlated to their corresponding KK transformed bands, which are superimposable, in turn, on the absorption signals acquired in transflection mode and whose frequency attribution is widely known by literature [ 24 – 26 ]. The fact that the KK corrected and TR spectra are comparable means that the required conditions for a successful Kramers-Kronig transformation have been correctly fulfilled, and confirms the specular reflection as the main collected contribute of the total reflection mode spectra in the mid-IR region.…”

This study presents mid and near-infrared (7500-375 cm−1) total reflection mode spectra of several natural organic materials used in artworks as binding media, consolidants, adhesives, or protective coatings. A novel approach to describe and interpret reflectance bands as well as calculated absorbance after Kramers-Kronig transformation (KKT) is proposed. Transflection mode spectra have represented a valuable support both to study the distorted reflectance bands and to validate the applicability and usefulness of the KK correction. The aim of this paper is to make available to scientists and conservators a comprehensive infrared reflection spectral database, together with its detailed interpretation, as a tool for the noninvasive identification of proteins, lipids, polysaccharides, and resins by means of portable noncontact FTIR spectrometers.

Fine particulate matter (PM) in the atmosphere has become a significant air contaminant with substantial health consequences. Although airborne remote sensing and ground sensor monitoring can offer air quality datasets containing PM2.5, there are limitations to effectively analysing large long‐term datasets. The research aims to evaluate air quality over the Himalayan region using the multifractal approach for the PM2.5 data time series. Fractal dimension (FD), Hurtz exponent (H), and predictability (PI) are estimated using the rescaled range. PM2.5 is found to have high concentration and frequency throughout the day. The same is found in the night hours during peak tourism months. The hourly PM2.5 time series datasets have shown multifractality. The primary reason for this is emissions produced by vehicles and anthropocentric activities in the region. The H is used to assess the dynamic features of the PM2.5 time series in terms of persistence and self‐correlation. In the context of climate change studies, it is crucial to monitor the spatial distribution and dynamic behaviour of PM2.5 in the Himalayan foothills. This study aims to provide prediction analyses and air quality index (AQI) estimates and demonstrate how PM2.5 concentrations alter the sensitive environment throughout the micro to macro scale. This will help us to build a long‐term strategy for reducing the harmful effect of increasing pollution levels on the ecosystem and human health.
