Infrared Studies of the Reaction of Methanesulfonic Acid with Trimethylamine on Surfaces

Abstract: Organosulfur compounds generated from a variety of biological as well as anthropogenic sources are oxidized in air to form sulfuric acid and methanesulfonic acid (MSA). Both of these acids formed initially in the gas phase react with ammonia and amines in air to form and grow new particles, which is important for visibility, human health and climate. A competing sink is deposition on surfaces in the boundary layer. However, relatively little is known about reactions after they deposit on surfaces. We report he… Show more

“…The time scales in Fig. 5, 6 include the 2 s taken to travel to and through the scanning mobility particle sizer, which may be an overestimate if the species growing the clusters are removed rapidly on surfaces inside the sampling line (Nishino et al, 2014) and particle formation and growth ceases.…”

“…31,44 In Fig. 6b, the absorption band around 1450 cm À1 is related to the methyl groups, 45 and that around 2280 cm À1 shows the presence of O]C]O bonds, which were due to the asymmetric stretching vibration of CO 2 molecules. 46 As explained in Fig.…”

“…Table 3 shows the location wavenumber and description of the MSA-H 2 O system to allow for a better understanding of the FTIR analysis results. It is based on various literature cited [27][28][29][30][31][32][33]. The FTIR analysis results, which were obtained through before and after fractional distillation, are shown in Figures 2 and 3.…”
