İngilizce Okuma Becerisinde Karşılaşılan Sorunların “Jigsaw Reading” Tekniği İle Giderilmesi*

Abstract

ARTICLE INFOIn the process of learning English as a foreign language, it is very important to develop reading skills as it covers the productivity-requiring skills such as writing and speaking skills and constitutes a prerequisite for understanding. In the process of developing reading skills, students' interests and abilities, individual differences play an important role. For this reason, it is important to take these individual differences, interests and abilities into consideration and to enrich the learning environment with various activities. So, the aim of this study is to use Jigsaw reading technique to solve problems encountered in English reading skills. The research has been handled with the action research method. The study group consists of 34 students attending 9-A class in a high school in Afyonkarahisar in 2018-2019 academic year. Research data were collected by semi-structured interview form, observation form, researcher-practitioner and student diaries. Descriptive analysis was used in the analysis of the data. Data indicate that students have successfully completed activities related to reading skills by working in cooperation during these activities. Even though the students encounter words and sentence structures that they do not know, they did not give up with a sense of responsibility and they were motivated against reading passive activities by paying attention. It was seen that the students identified the source of the problems they faced during the reading activities and solved these problems.
