“…Although it is not a life-threatening complication, it can cause dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, wound dehiscence, pulmonary aspiration, and delayed discharge [55]. The factors such as anxiety, female gender, previous history of nausea and vomiting, postoperative opioid use, and pain may increase the risk of postoperative nausea and vomiting [56,57]. In our study, patients experienced high levels of nausea-vomiting-retching in the postoperative period according to the RINVR (the total RINVR score -24.1 ± 0.91) and the sub-dimensions of symptom experience, symptom occurrence, and symptom distress.…”

Previous literature has demonstrated the effectiveness of aromatherapy for treating PONV (Abril, 2019; Hodge et al, 2014; Wilson & Knaggs, 2018). This study adds to the research base supporting the use of aromatherapy for PONV in an orthopaedic surgical setting, and further demonstrates a reduction in the use of antiemetic medications, with their associated costs and potential side effects.…”

“…Another study reports that PONV may occur in 25–30% of all surgical cases, and in upwards of 80% of cases involving high risk patients (Sansonnens et al, 2016). Factors that can increase a patient's risk for developing PONV include a history of smoking, motion sickness, or previous PONV, and female sex (Abril, 2019). Patients who require general anesthesia are also at a higher risk of developing PONV (Sansonnens et al, 2016).…”

“…4,6 Another group of researchers investigated the efficacy of inhaled peppermint oil to treat PONV among a small group of patients who had undergone laparoscopic abdominal surgery. 7 All of the 35 patients who used the aromatherapy device reported a decrease in their nausea levels. Further, of the 15 patients who reported nausea upon arrival to the postanesthesia care unit and used aromatherapy, 11 (73%) experienced complete relief from nausea before discharge from the postanesthesia care unit.…”
