Nine Mexican spring bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars derived from CIMMYT germplasm and the U.S. spring wheat cultivar Wheaton were susceptible to the Mexican Puccinia striiformis pathotype 14E14 in seedling growth stage, but displayed different levels of adult plant resistances to the same pathotype when tested in the field. One hundred and eighteen random F 2 plant derived F3 and F5 lines from the crosses of these ten adult plant resistant wheats and susceptible cultivar Jupateco 73S were evaluated in the field . The moderate adult plant resistance of Penjamo 62, Lerma Rojo 64, Nacozari 76, Tesia 79, and Wheaton was under monogenic genetic control and was attributed to the adult plant stripe rust resistance gene Yr18 . The moderate resistances of Cleopatra 74, Zaragoza 75, and Apache 81 were also monogenic, but gene Yr18 was absent .Pavon 76 carried two partially effective additive genes ; and the adult plant resistance of Tonichi 81 was based on additive interaction involving Yr18 and two additional partially effective genes . Tonichi 81 does not carry any seedling resistance gene, however, the adult plant resistance is highly effective worldwide . This resistance, designated as the Yr18 complex, is of a durable nature . The partial adult plant resistance of Pavon 76 has also remained durable in Mexico and other countries where it is grown .

AbstractIn order to combine genes for enhancing rust resistance and high yield potential in wheat, parent lines were selected for hybridization on the basis of slow rusting history and phenotypic characters for durable resistance. The hybridized germplasm was advanced in filial generations from F 1 to F 5 . Total 750 head rows were planted in F 6 from selected heads among F 5 generation. From 750 single head rows planted in Kaghan, 345 lines were selected on the basis of agronomic traits and rust resistance; two hundred and twenty lines were selected for high yield and rust resistance performance and evaluated for the presence of durable rust resistant genes with molecular markers. It was confirmed that the lines showing durable rust resistance possessed Lr34/Yr18, Lr46/Yr29 and Sr2/Yr30 genes in combination or individuals from these lines. The results indicated that the most prominent lines i.e., V-11211, V-11212, V-11218, V-11227, V-11262, V-11288, V-11296, V-11304, V-11308, V-11319, V-11338, V-11353, V-11365 and V-11396 showed the combination of three designated slow rusting genes. These lines were high yielding with better resistance than all existing approved wheat varieties of the country. None of these lines had complete resistance, but were of slow rusting type and were suitable for commercial cultivation. These results will be useful for wheat breeders and pathologists of the country in planning of future hybridization program.

Wheat along with rice and maize is fulfilling half of the calories demands of the world. Global Wheat production has increased tremendously since green revolution in 1960's and helped in minimizing hunger and malnutrition. Developing countries, which consume 60% of the global wheat production, have shown a higher yield increase than the developed countries in the past [1]. It was driven by the hunger prevalence in these countries and was attributable to the introduction of high yielding and rusted resistant semi dwarf varieties developed under the collaborative efforts of International and National research systems during the last 50 years. Whereas, climate change and the emergence of new pests and diseases are threatening the food sustainability. The evolution of new races of disease pathogens like stem rust (Ug 99) is of serious concern. In order to feed the ever increasing population we have to increase wheat production at the rate 1.6% which can be achieved by developing high yielding varieties having a good tolerance level for biotic and abiotic stresses.
