Inhibin/activin-betaE subunit is expressed in normal and pathological human placental tissue including chorionic carcinoma cell lines

Abstract: We demonstrated that inhibin-betaE is expressed in normal and pathological human placenta tissues. Although the precise role of this novel inhibin subunit for human placenta development is quite unclear, similarities with the well-characterized betaA- and betaB-subunits suggest an involvement in autocrine/paracrine signaling pathways, angiogenesis, decidualization and tissue remodeling under normal as well as malignant conditions. Additionally, the human chorionic carcinoma cell lines JEG and BeWo synthesize t… Show more

“…Concerning activins B and AB, conflicting studies about their expression in placenta were reported (McCluggage et al, 1998;Petraglia, 1997). The βc and βE subunits were also identified in this organ (Gingelmaier et al, 2011;Weissenbacher et al, 2010).…”

“…Moreover, inhibin βE is synthesized in normal and abnormal placenta [5,34,35] and human cervix [36]. This novel subunit was also demonstrated in the Ishikawa endometrial carcinoma cell line, which suggests that these cells may be useful as an in vitro model for studying the βE-subunit [31].…”

“…Immunofluorescence analysis was performed as previously described (9,(11)(12)(13)(14)(15)23,25). Briefly, cells grown on glass coverslips were fixed with acetone for 10 min at room temperature and washed twice with PBS.…”

“…Furthermore, two additional β-subunits have been identified in humans, βC and βE (7). Although these novel subunits are synthesised in a wide range of normal and malignant tissues (9)(10)(11)(12)(13)(14)(15), their precise function still remains unclear.…”
