“…Fenoprop (2-[2,4,5trichlorophenoxy]propionic acid) was discovered in the 1950s and proved to be very successful (Southwick et al, 1953) but the registration was dropped in the 1980s due to fear of contamination with the carcinogen dioxine. The preharvest drop control properties of daminozide (2,2dimethylhydrazide) were recognized in the 1960s soon after its growth control properties were recognized (Edgerton and Hoffman, 1966). This compound was the dominant preharvest drop control compound for over 20 years, not only because of its effectiveness but also because it delayed ripening, increased red color, reduced ethylene production and enhanced flesh firmness.…”

“…Maleic hydrazide inhibits sucker growth on tobacco plants, delays the sprouting of stored potatoes and onions, and reduces grass growth (Tate, 1965). B-Nine delays the fruit drop of apples (Edgerton and Hoffman, 1966) and beta-hydroxyethylhydrazine promotes flowering of pineapples (Gowing and Leeper, 1955).…”

“…The fruits were as firm or firmer than the control and significantly firmer than fruits from the trees receiving the 2,4,5-T sprays alone. In another study, Edgerton and Hoffman (1966) found that Alar applied between full bloom and September gave good control of preharvest drop of Mcintosh apples. Anatomical studies showed that delayed fruit drop was associated not only with delayed fruit maturity but also with changes in the abscission zone.…”
