Inhibition of keratinocyte growth by different NepaleseZanthoxylum species

Abstract: A total of 11 methanol extracts obtained from four different Nepalese Zanthoxylum species were screened for their antiproliferative activity against the growth of human keratinocytes (HaCaT cells). The extract obtained from Z. armatum barks was highly active with an IC50 value of 11 µg/mL. Also, the extracts obtained from Z. oxyphyllum barks and roots with IC50 values of 53 and 57 µg/mL, respectively, showed potent activity. Their antiproliferative activity was not due to cytotoxic effects on cell membranes, … Show more

“…Z. oxyphyllum has also been reported as stimulant, stomachic and sudorific, appetizer, and anthelmintic and removes pain, tumors, useful in gastric problem, headache, body ache, fever, cold and cough and also used for the purification of blood ( Anonymous, 2003 , Kanjilal, 1992 , Kirtikar and Basu, 1993 ). Extracts from the bark and root of Z. oxyphyllum have been reported to have antiproliferative activity against the growth of human keratinocytes ( Kumar and Muller, 1999 ).…”

“…The methanolic extract of Zanthoxylum armatum has shown antiproliferative effect (Kumar and Muller, 1999). The essential oil of fruit of Zanthoxylum armatum exhibit antibacterial, antifungal and anthelmintic activities (Mehta et al, 1981).…”

“…Antiproliferative activity was not due to the cytotoxic effects on cell membranes rather they protect against the radical-induced-damage to model membranes stimulated with 2,2´-azo-bis(2-amidinopropane) dihydrochloride. 52…”
