“…A decrease in serum LCAT has previously been reported in adults maintained on TPN for long periods of time (27,28). Our present study shows that in spite of low LCAT activity and apoprotein AI levels , serum cholesterol concentrations rema in within normal levels during the course of TPN.…”

“…Dialysis treatment could, however, theoretically improve LCAT activity by causing structural changes in HDL or in its binding properties. There is no evidence that heparin treatment stimulates LCAT: indeed increases in plasma free fatty acid levels which would result from heparin actually inhibit LCAT [21]. It seems more likely that improved nutrition or chronic exposure to heparin resulting from dialysis could subtly alter the lipoproteins which modulate LCATs func tional capacity without changing its concentration.…”

“…Thus, Chan et al 21 showed that LCAT activity in hemodialysis patients, already low, was further decreased by dialysis, and this effect was attributed to inhibition by fatty acids, the concentration of which increases because of heparinization. 34 Other studies indicate that the direct effect of hemodialysis has been to increase LCAT activity slightly when measured with the endogenous lipoproteins acting as substrates, but not with exogenous lipoprotein substrates. 23 In this latter study and in those of Bories et al 22 and Walker et al, 31 LCAT activity measured with endogenous lipoprotein substrates was not significantly different from controls.…”
