Inhibition of penile erection in rats by a long‐acting somatostatin analogue, octreotide (SMS 201–995)

Abstract: Objective To assess the eCect of a new somatostatin animals received either saline or 50 mg SMS 201-995 over 1 h and 30 min later, the stimulation was analogue (SMS 201-995, octreotide) on erectile function in rats.repeated. Results After administering SMS 201-995 or saline, the Materials and methods Animals were fasted and anaesthetized intraperitoneally with pentobarbital. A levels of penile erection reduced linearly in both groups, but SMS 201-995 caused a greater decrease cannula was placed in the trachea … Show more

“…This effect is probably similar to the inhibitory effects of somatostatin on serotonin secretion in the gut, believed to generally antagonize the biogenic amine release from neuroendocrine cells . Potential support of somatostatin's inhibition on sexual arousal is the finding that octreotide, a somatostatin agonist, inhibits erection in male rats .…”

“…In addition, cabergoline has proven effective in restore fertility in men with iperPRL due to micro- and macro-prolactinomas [ 51 ], but the effects of dopamine agonists on sexual health of men with acromegaly have not been studied. Conversely, the somatostatin analogue octreotide may have a negative effect on erectile function, as suggested by the inhibition of penile erection in rats [ 52 ] but there are currently no reports on humans. Similarly, octreotide transiently decreased sperm motility in stallions [ 53 ], but human data are lacking.…”
