Inhibition of Pseudomonas aeruginosa quorum sensing by methyl gallate from Mangifera indica

Nourhan G. Naga,
Ahmed A. Zaki,
Dalia E. El-Badan
et al.

Abstract: Antipathogenic drugs are a potential source of therapeutics, particularly following the emergence of multiple drug-resistant pathogenic microorganisms in the last decade. The inhibition of quorum sensing (QS) is an advanced antipathogenic approach for suppression of bacterial virulence and dissemination. This study aimed to investigate the inhibitory effect of some Egyptian medicinal plants on the QS signaling system of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Among the tested plants, Mangifera indica exhibited the highest quo… Show more

“…The use of natural compounds as antivirulence and anti-QS agents was previously reported. Methyl gallate showed a strong inhibition of QS in P. aeruginosa strains PAO1 and PA14 at ¼ MICs without affecting bacterial viability ( Naga et al., 2023 ). Moreover, flavanones, naringenin, eriodictyol, and taxifolin extracted from Combretum albiflorum interfered with pyocyanin production and elastase activity in P. aeruginosa without impacting bacterial growth.…”

“…The fourth is the AI-based integrated quorum sensing system. 24 In particular, QS blockade abrogates the virulence without affecting bacterial growth. Therefore, QS represents an attractive target for anti-virulence therapy.…”
