“…Similar to that observed in a CAS for yet unclear reasons, activated sludge exposure to SiO 2 NPs [8] and their inhibitory effect on total respiration [24] were also not associated with low oxidation of COD and NH 3 . Over a period of 20 days after the exposure of activated MBR to SiO 2 NPs, I T in the presence of 144 nm SiO 2 NPs (M = 37, SD = 7) was higher than with 28 nm SiO 2 NPs (M = 8, SD = 9), t(10) =´6, p < 0.05.…”

“…The size-dependent toxicity of nanoparticles has been widely reported in literature, particularly in studies of nanoparticle toxicity in pure culture bacteria [22,23]. Previously, we have shown in batch experiments that smaller SiO 2 NPs (~12 nm and~151 nm) were more inhibitory than the larger SiO 2 NPs (442 nm and 683 nm) given that the concentration or dose did not change throughout the period of study [24]. The size-dependent toxicity of nanoparticles observed from these studies is most likely due to their greater surface area [25].…”

“…For verification and comparison purpose, three other methods including atomic force microscopy (AFM), respiration inhibition, and potassium ion leakage were also employed for evaluation of the membrane damage effects of the phenolic compounds [12,26]. The results of this study indicated that the ferricyanide-mediated electrochemical method has significant potential as a membrane damage assay tool for phenolic EO compounds.…”
