“…The apparently constitutive expression of thiosulfate dehydrogenase in M. thiooxidans regardless of growth substrate indicates that the ability to oxidize thiosulfate from the environment to yield ATP is always present in this species, allowing more carbon to be assimilated to biomass, giving M. thiooxidans a competitive advantage. It is worth noting that the toxicity of tetrathionate in combination with thiosulfate to various Gammaproteobacteria has been previously reported (Palumbo and Alford, 1970) and may indicate that the tetrathionate secreted by M. thiooxidans could be toxic to other marine bacteria, with obvious advantage to M. thiooxidans.…”

“…al., 1973;Englund et al, 1968;Pal et al, 1984;Kitamura and Maruyama, 1986;Aworh and Nakai, 1988). Sodium tetrathionate also has an antimicrobial effect against some bacteria (Palumbo and Alford, 1970). It was possible that addition of tetrathionate to papaya latex might decrease the microbial load of latex.…”

“…Tetrathionate is toxic to many Gammaproteobacteria, for example, and production of it will no doubt inhibit or kill the competition (Palumbo and Alford 1970;Boden et al 2010).…”
