Inhibitory Control Mediates the Relationship Between Depressed Mood and Overgeneral Memory Recall in Children

Abstract: It has been well established that depressed mood is related to overgeneral memory recall (OGM), which refers to a relative difficulty in retrieving specific information from one's autobiographical memory (AM). The present study examined whether OGM is also related to depressed mood in children and whether lack of inhibitory control mediates this relationship. One hundred thirty-five children (ages 9-13) completed measures assessing depressive symptoms, AM specificity, and inhibitory control. The results showed… Show more

“…Although other studies of executive function have reported an association between specificity and verbal fluency Sumner et al, 2011Sumner et al, , 2014, working memory (Raes et al, 2006), and inhibition (Raes et al, 2010), our results are consistent with those that have not found associations with some or all of these particular executive subcomponents (Goddard et al, 1998;Watson et al, 2013;Williams & Scott, 1988). That is, when testing all these subcomponents simultaneously in the same sample, we found that strategic retrieval processes emerged as the only significant predictor.…”

“…instructions (Study 2, Dalgleish et al, 2007;Raes, Verstraeten, Bijttebier, Vasey, & Dalgleish, 2010). However, failures to find associations between executive measures and specificity have also been reported (Goddard, Dritschel, & Burton, 1998;Raes et al, 2006;Sumner et al, 2011;Watson, Berntsen, Kuyken, & Watkins, 2013;Williams & Scott, 1988).…”

“…Their findings highlight the importance of maintaining a task set (i.e., a memory response has to be specific) during the AMT itself (Yanes, Roberts, & Carlos, 2008) and inhibiting inappropriate response candidates (i.e., overgeneral memories) when generating a memory response (Barnhofer, de JongMeyer, Kleinpaß, & Nikesch, 2002;Dalgleish et al, 2007). Indeed, more recent studies have provided further evidence on this impoverished-inhibition hypothesis, showing that reduced AMS is associated with impaired inhibitory control measured by a questionnaire and various experimental paradigms (Piolino et al, 2010;Raes et al, 2010;Smets et al, 2014).…”

“…Although recent studies have suggested that reduced AMS is associated with general impairment in executive control (Dalgleish et al, 2007;Raes, Verstraeten, Bijttebier, Vasey, & Dalgleish, 2010;Smets, Wessel, & Raes, 2014), limited empirical evidence is available on the way information is processed during autobiographical memory retrieval. More specifically, it is still unclear what materials are selected and activated automatically or spontaneously during specific memory retrieval, and what (dys)functions in such cognitive mechanisms contribute to reduced AMS.…”

“…As already in early adolescence meaningful differences in autobiographical memory specificity were found (Drummond, Dritschel, Astell, O'Carroll, & Dalgleish, 2006;Raes, Verstraeten, Bijttebier, Vasey, & Dalgleish, 2010;Vrielynck, Deplus, & Philippot, 2007), and as previous research found that, in early adolescence, similar cognitive vulnerabilities are developed during interactions with attachment figures (Mezulis, Hyde, & Abramson, 2006), the current study investigated these three hypotheses in that age-group.…”
