Inhibitory effect of edible plant extracts on 12‐O‐tetradecanoylphorbol–13‐acetate‐induced ear oedema in mice

Abstract: We report that spice, vegetable and fruit extracts inhibit 12-0-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA)-induced ear oedema in mice. About 100 methanol extracts obtained from spices, vegetables and fruits were assayed and their inhibition ratios calculated. In general, the spice extracts were more effective inhibitors than vegetable and fruit extracts. The methanol extracts of hop, stevia, cinnamon, turmeric, mate, mint, New Zealand spinach, watercress, tomato and seedling of radish markedly inhibited the inflamm… Show more

“…Pure humulone has been described to inhibit TPA-and arachidonic acid-induced ear edema in mice and TPA-induced tumor formation in mice skin [32,52]. Furthermore, the inhibitory effect on the transcriptional activation of COX-2 has been demonstrated in cultured cells [34] and mouse skin [33].…”

“…It would be particularly useful to develop a method of prevention at the promotion stage of carcino genesis, as such a method may be applicable even after exposure to tumor-initiating agents, which seems, in many cases, to be unavoidable in human life. Our earlier studies demonstrated that some extracts from edible plants and crude drugs inhibited TPA-induced inflamma tory ear edema and active compounds were separated from their extracts [4,5], In this context, the topical application of the antitu mor-promoting agent, humulon, afforded a high degree of protection against tumor formation in mouse skin. In addition, humulon inhibited AA-induced inflammatory ear edema in mice, which is an acute skin inflammation model due to increased production of endogenous leukotrienes and prostaglandins [6][7][8].…”

“…Humulon, one of the bitters in the hop, has been used as an antibiotic [2] and antifungal [3] agent. In our previous study, humulon was isolated from the hop and found to inhibit 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA)-induced inflammatory ear edema in mice [4], Furthermore, in this study, topical application of humulon markedly suppressed the promo tion of skin tumors induced by twice weekly application of TPA following initiation by a single application of 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA) in ICR mice.…”

“…Peppermint ( M. piperita ) oil is one of the most popular and widely used essential oils, mostly because of its main components, Menthol, and menthone [4]. Previous studies have shown antiviral [5], antibacterial [6, 7], antifungal [6, 8–10], antibiofilm formation [1113], radioprotective [14], antioedema [15], analgesic [16], and antioxidant activities [6] of the EO and methanolic extracts of herbal parts and callus cultures of M. piperita . In addition, M. piperita EO has been shown to cause inhibitory effects against radial fungal growth and aflatoxin production by Aspergillus species [17].…”
