Initial Acute Animal Experiment Using a New Miniature Axial Flow Pump in Series With the Natural Heart

Abstract: We have advocated an axial flow blood pump called "valvo pump" that is implanted at the aortic valve position, and we have developed axial flow blood pumps to realize the concept of the valvo pump. The latest model of the axial flow blood pump mainly consists of a stator, a directly driven impeller, and a hydrodynamic bearing. The axial flow blood pump has a diameter of 33 mm and length of 74 mm, and the length of anatomical occupation is 33 mm. The axial flow blood pump is anastomosed to the aorta with polyte… Show more

“…As an alternative option, a serially connected axial‐flow blood pump (AFBP) enables pulsatile blood perfusion to the downstream end‐organs without any rotational speed modulation 10 . Upstream of the coronary sinus is a suitable position for implantation of the AFBP to avoid disturbance of coronary and cerebral circulation 11 ––this is exactly the concept of the “valvo‐pump” 12,13 .…”

“…Then, we developed a new axial flow blood pump (second valvo pump) using our original brushless motor and a passive magnetic bearing . In addition, the hemodynamic change under ventricular assist device (VAD) using the second valvo pump connected in series with the natural heart was investigated using in vivo studies . The experimental results showed that the second valvo pump enabled pulsatile blood perfusion to the end organs downstream from the pump without rotational speed modulation; however, the potential risk of decreased blood flow caused by a pressure drop upstream of the pump was measured.…”
