Initiated Chemical Vapor Deposition of Crosslinked Organic Coatings for Controlling Gentamicin Delivery

Abstract: A coating consisting of a copolymer of methacrylic acid and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate was deposited over a gentamicin film by initiated chemical vapor deposition with the aim of controlling the drug release. Gentamicin release in water was monitored by means of conductance measurements and of UV-vis Fluorescence Spectroscopy. The influence of the polymer chemical composition, specifically of its crosslinking density, has been investigated as a tool to control the swelling behavior of the initiated chemica… Show more

“…The low substrate temperature of iCVD is also compatible with substrates that are unable to withstand significant heating. As a result, iCVD layers have been deposited directly on top of reservoir layers of drug molecules without degrading the drug (Decandia et al, 2020 ).…”

“…Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) is widely used for quantifying iCVD copolymer composition. Figure 3A displays the FTIR spectra for a series of copolymers grown from the monomers methacrylic acid (MAA) and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) (Decandia et al, 2020 ). The most intense peak in Figure 3A , as well as in the FTIR spectra of many iCVD films, is the stretching mode of the carbonyl group (C=O).…”

“…Among the possible chemical vapor deposition methods, initiated chemical vapor deposition (iCVD) suits the requirements to coat pharmaceutics as it operates without plasma, works under mild pressure (>100 mTorr) and low substrate temperature (20–60 °C) and is, therefore, also suitable for delicate substrates such as tissue paper, pharmaceutics or even ionic liquids [ 4 , 5 , 6 ]. iCVD was invented in 2005 by the group of Karen Gleason at the Massachusetts Institute of Technologies and is a vacuum-based free radical polymerization technique [ 7 , 8 , 9 ].…”
