Initiative action of tumor-associated macrophage during tumor metastasis

Abstract: Tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) are a significant component of the microenvironment of any solid tumors in the majority of cancers, associated with unfavorable prognosis. TAMs emerge as attractive targets for therapeutic strategies aimed at reprogramming their protumor phenotype into an effective antitumor activity. In this review article, we present an overview of mechanisms responsible for TAMs recruitment and highlight the roles of TAMs in the regulation of tumor angiogenesis, invasion, metastasis, immun… Show more

“…However, inflammasome reactions often occur in macrophages [32]. An influx of macrophages into tumors is well documented [33][34][35][36] and we showed increased mRNA for the chicken macrophage marker in tumor ovaries. Although NLRP3 expression did not differ between normal and tumor ovaries, NLRP3 levels were significantly correlated with the macrophage marker MRCL1B.…”

“…Accumulating evidence supports that MDSCs contribute to cancer immune evasion and tumor growth by suppressing T cell anti-tumor functions and modulating innate immune responses [86] as well as through non-immune suppressive pathway [89,90]. MDSCs also accelerate angiogenesis, and subsequently promote tumor progression and metastasis through the expression of cytokines [91]. In many cancers, blood MDSC numbers correlate with stage and metastatic burden [92].…”

“…Actually, TAMs seem to be crucial and the most abundant immune cell components in tumor microenvironment [ 32 ]. Furthermore, in cancer, the TAM level is strongly associated with poor prognosis and survival, which made these cells attractive targets for chemotherapeutic interventions [ 33 ]. In this study, by using RAW 264.7 murine macrophage cell line, we investigated the effect of EP, a widely antineoplastic agent that interferes with MT dynamics, on TGF- β -induced cell migration and uPA expression.…”
