A Review on Sustainability Characteristics Development for Wooden Furniture Design

The design of furniture products is influenced by increasing consumer interest in green products and sustainability values. However, although the demand for sustainable furniture products is high, the standardization of sustainability characteristics in furniture design has still not been achieved. A thorough literature review was conducted, which considered various sustainability characteristics that apply in industries that design furniture. This review paper aimed to identify common sustainability characteristics so that a new standard for furniture industries can be established. In this review, numerous themes were explored relating to design guidelines, design criteria, design preferences, design optimization, design evaluation and assessment, design decision making, strategic planning, design strategies, the integration of eco-design, and eco-design tools. A total of 137 articles were reviewed regarding their sustainability characteristics according to the triple bottom-line framework for a relevant product sector. Due to the limited reports on the sustainability characteristics of furniture design activities, this paper also tried to include common sustainability characteristics of non-furniture products that are available on the market. Through the review, 10 sustainability characteristics were identified for the environment, 17 for the economy, and 16 for the social dimension as being common among manufacturers when designing their products. A further in-depth analysis was conducted by mapping the characteristics to those that were significantly implemented in the design process, of which five (5) were environmental, two (2) were economic, and five (5) were social sustainability characteristics. This review is significant in helping furniture designers to use appropriate and effective sustainability standards in the design and manufacture of products that meet customers’ demands. Previous literature reviews have not clearly measured the triple bottom line. Furthermore, no definite characteristics were proposed in previous works regarding wooden furniture design, leaving a gap to be closed by future works.

Malaysia's furniture manufacturing industry is made up of small and medium enterprises (SMEs), which contribute significantly to the country's economy. One major issue that these SMEs face is sustainable manufacturing: lowering throughputs and increasing production efficiencies. The study aims to improve the efficiency of producing a learning tower; a furniture product by an SME called Industerior Design by implementing material flow analysis (MFA) to monitor production throughputs. The MFA was used to compare two different learning tower designs (Design A and B). The most sustainable design was determined based on the MFA. A cause-and-effect analysis was also carried out using the Ishikawa fishbone diagram to identify potential causes of production inefficiencies. Both designs were proven to have the same processes involved and the same waste stream generated; however, Design A produces four learning towers from a single wood plank with 15.5% waste generated, while Design B produces only two towers with 44.6% waste generated. Of the waste generated by both designs, 60% from Design B was recyclable, while for Design A only 25% was reusable. Inefficiencies can be caused by a lack of skilled workers, a lack of or infrequent maintenance of equipment, or the design of the product itself. When the amount of recyclable waste that can be used for other future projects was considered, it was determined that Design B was more sustainable in the long run. MFA is thus thought to be a simple but powerful tool that can be easily implemented by SMEs in designing out waste from their products as the furniture industry moves toward more sustainable manufacturing and a more circular economy.

In general, profitability and efficiency have been the main interest for organization. However, the increasing concerns for the environment from government, regulators, customers and other stakeholders has forced companies to seek for alternatives to achieve green objectives. The difficulties faced by organizations are lack of awareness and guideline in implementing green practices in their daily operation. Under constrained resources, employers are reluctant to spend money on something unclear. During the last decade, lean manufacturing seems to be visible trend in most of the manufacturing industries in Malaysia. As lean tends to emphasize on waste reduction, it provides similarity between lean and green. Therefore, it is a better atmosphere to deploy green practices and tools under existing lean manufacturing. The purpose of this paper is to present a review on the synergies between green and lean and identifying the determinants that affecting both lean and green manufacturing for Malaysian manufacturers. The determinant obtained are financial benefit, incentive, legislation, stakeholder, management commitment, technology, environmental awareness and brand image or competitiveness. Besides, the authors identified and suggested future research directions on developing an integrated lean-green model for daily operation. This study aims to assist researchers to identify the opportunities and challenges on lean-green model and this review is useful for manufacturers and government in developing manufacturing policies and guideline.
