Innovation across 13 ungulate species: problem solvers are less integrated in the social group and less neophobic

Abstract: Innovation is the ability to solve new problems or find novel solutions to familiar problems, and it is known to provide animals with crucial fitness benefits. Although this ability has been extensively studied in some taxa, the factors that predict innovation within and across species are still largely unclear. In this study, we used a novel foraging task to test 111 individuals belonging to 13 ungulate species—a still understudied taxon. To solve the task, individuals had to open transparent and opaque cups … Show more

“…The daily diet of all species included hay, which was available ad libitum, and fresh vegetables. None of the study subjects had ever been tested in an optical illusion task before, although all species had occasionally participated in enrichment activities or in other non-invasive experimental tasks (Caicoya et al 2023 ; Schaffer et al 2020 , 2021 ).…”

“…Third, domesticated species have been selected for skills and traits that facilitate their interaction with humans and are usually considered to be more playful and explorative than their wild counterparts 76 , 77 . Therefore, domesticated species may be more interested in anthropogenic objects and more likely to explore them, and thus might have a higher chance to acquire important information on their properties during their lives 29 , 50 , 78 .…”
