Innovations through the Supply Chain and Increased Production: The Case of Aquaculture

Abstract: During the last decades, aquaculture has been the world's fastest growing food production technology. This is primarily due to the fact that control with the production process has allowed innovations thorough the supply chain, leading to increased demand and thereby increased production. We investigate this process for three leading species; salmon, sea bass and shrimp. The process has been very different for the three species. Sea bass show that despite impressive performance on the cost side, production gro… Show more

“…At the same time, the industry needs to radically reform itself and set itself a sound financial structure going forward. Research on environmental issues, health and welfare, nutrition and sustainable feeds, species diversification, quality control and traceability, and knowledge management and dissemination is urgently needed for mariculture to evolve in the postcrisis phase as a science-based industry (Rigos 2013 Asche et al (2007Asche et al ( , 2012 argue that global aquaculture growth since 1995 has been based partly on innovations in logistics, packaging, processing, and product form development along the entire supply chain. In Greece, some strategic planning for marketing development has included image creation and message selection, promotional actions for the sector and its products within the wider context of product differentiation and species diversification, quality certification, eco-labeling, prepacking, product ID, and company imaging education (Papageorgiou 1999).…”

“…This is vital for the judicious use of medicated feeds to combat issues surrounding antimicrobial resistance (Cabello 2006;AVMA 2019;FDA 2019). Such steps are progressively adopted in various aquaculture sectors, such as the Norwegian salmonid industry (Asche et al 2012).…”
