Innovative Fudan rT staging in endoscopic surgery for recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma

Abstract: Background American Joint Committee on Cancer/Union for International Cancer Control (AJCC/UICC) rT staging have great clinical impracticality. The aim of the present study was to establish a new rT staging to guide endoscopic surgery for the treatment of recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma (rNPC). Methods This surgical rT staging (named Fudan rT staging) was constructed using two significant risk factors: the distance from the tumor margin to the internal carotid artery, and dural invasion. Log‐rank and receiv… Show more

“…Currently, the recurrent TNM (rTNM) of the Union for International Cancer Control/American Joint Committee on Cancer (UICC/AJCC) staging system is still widely used to predict recurrent NPC prognosis [ 14 , 22 ]. However, there are variations in outcomes among patients with lrNPC in the same stage, as determined by rTNM [ 22 24 ]. Notably, the majority of rTNM staging was based on MRI evaluation.…”

“…This staging system is commonly used to predict the prognosis of such patients after radiotherapy, to guide clinicians in making treatment decisions for different risk groups, and to evaluate treatment outcomes between different centers. However, these rT staging systems have great clinical impracticality, as most studies have found little difference in survival among patients with different T stages (Liang et al 2016 , Kang et al 2017 , Li et al 2023 , Kang et al 2017 ). Therefore, there is an urgent need for a new rT staging system to guide the treatment of rNPC.…”
