Innovative Solution of Utilization of the Clay Slates Accumulated in the Gorge of the River Duruji

Abstract

The article deals with the innovative solution of utilization of the clay slatesaccumulated in the gorge of the river Duruji. Kvareli Region of Georgia issubject to the impact of mudslides with frequent periodicity. The “carrier” ofthese mudslides is the River Duruji. The bulk of the mudslides is representedby flat rounded stones of different sizes. The level of accumulation of this bulkexceeds the altitude of the regional center by ten meters, which could causeirreparable ecological and social damage to Kvareli City and the region onthe whole. The package of measures on preventing the impact of mudslidesincludes clearing the riverbed and the fan of the area of about 147 km2 fromstony mass. This is associated with the displacement of about 5 mln. tones ofthe bulk to the places remote from the river, which causes significant losses offertile land. Based on the physical-chemical and technological investigationsperformed, it is proposed to use the stony mass – diluvium (of talus) of shale“elemental raw material” for the production of building materials.
