Innovative stormwater management at Marine Corps Air Station, New River

Abstract

Because of the nature of Marine Corps Air Station, New River, there are several stormwater management challenges it faces. The station's location in coastal North Carolina means that it is located within a uniquely sensitive environment. Additionally, being an airport, there is a large number of impervious areas and Bird/Animal Strike Hazard (BASH) concerns. This article discusses three stormwater management initiatives undertaken by the station: (1) diverting stormwater inflow from the sanitary sewer system, (2) evaluating stormwater management techniques, such as low‐impact development, that are not stormwater ponds (which cause enhanced BASH concerns), and (3) assuring all station personnel are aware of their responsibilities at work to avoid releases with the use of simple, easy‐to‐understand environmental signage. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
