Innovative Treatments Enhancing the Functionality of Gut Microbiota to Improve Quality and Microbiological Safety of Foods of Animal Origin

Abstract: The gastrointestinal tract, or gut, microbiota is a microbial community containing a variety of microorganisms colonizing throughout the gut that plays a crucial role in animal health, growth performance, and welfare. The gut microbiota is closely associated with the quality and microbiological safety of foods and food products originating from animals. The gut microbiota of the host can be modulated and enhanced in ways that improve the quality and safety of foods of animal origin. Probiotics—also known as di… Show more

“…Gut microecology balance can be disturbed by environmental factors, damaged intestinal integrity, presence of pathogenic microorganisms and antibiotic administration. It is usually restored through fecal microbiota transplantation and dietary interventions, such as oral administration of probiotics, prebiotics, synbiotics and eubiotics as well as postbiotics ( Cheng et al., 2019 ; Koyun et al., 2022 ).

“…According to the ISAPP, synbiotics are a mixture of live microorganisms and substrate(s) selectively utilized by host microorganisms to confer a health benefit on the host (Swanson et al, 2020). Such mixtures consist of "good" bacteria (probiotics) and a nondigestible carbohydrate source (prebiotics) that encourage the growth of beneficial bacteria by favorably modifying the intestinal microflora and metabolism (Awad et al, 2009;El-Banna et al, 2010;Koyun et al, 2022;Melara et al, 2022). Benefits of regular consumption of probiotics and prebiotics include enhanced immune function, improved colonic integrity, decreased incidence and duration of intestinal infections, downregulated allergic responses, and improved digestion (Muzaffar et al, 2021).…”
