The use of mortars and plasters has been widespread in many cultures for thousands of years and these materials are found in the vast majority of built cultural heritage. They play a crucial role in the preservation of immovable heritage and must be taken into great consideration when conserving historical buildings. Plasters and mortars have been extensively studied from a chemical and mineralogical point of view. The main causes and mechanisms of damage and deterioration are understood and various methods and materials have been developed for their preservation. Treatment development, testing and evaluation in the laboratory, under controlled conditions, has produced a high level of knowledge. However, there is a divergence between the results of academic-scientific studies and practice in the field. Laboratory studies typically tackle only a few variables at the time and the results cannot always be directly applied to address the complex problems that restorers face in their daily work practice. In addition, in situ conservation-restoration is extremely challenging because many of large number of variables involved cannot be controlled or modified. Following a description of the ideal “value-based” conservation process, this compilation work discusses aspects related to understanding deterioration mechanisms and planning of preventive and remedial interventions in a way that may be useful to update conservators-restorers on the status of scientific research in this field, and to guide conservation-scientists to identify unresolved issues, which require future research efforts.

Various types of additives have been diachronically used in historic mortars, whereas their use in lime-based grouts, used for the restoration of historic structures, is rather limited. In this study, an effort was made to investigate the performance of glass additives in grouts, consisting of lime and natural pozzolan. The additives concerned glass fibers (3 and 6 mm in length), glass beads and bubbles, added in a proportion 0.3–3% w/w of binders. Five grout compositions were manufactured and their properties at fresh and hardened states were tested. From the evaluation of the results, it was asserted that glass additives influenced the grouts’ performance in a favorable way. Their fresh state and physical properties were maintained or slightly improved, while there was a significant enhancement of the long-term mechanical characteristics of the mixes. Additionally, the adhesion capability of grouts was notably increased, which is a crucial aspect indicating their efficacy.

Research on injection grouting for the stabilisation of delaminated wall paintings and historic plasters mostly focuses on grouts based on aerial or hydraulic lime and on earthen-based grouting. Materials for the stabilisation of delaminated gypsum-based plasters have never been fully studied, even if gypsum has been used as a constituent material of wall paintings since ancient times. Grout mixtures developed during this research were specifically designed for the stabilisation of the 11 th -century gypsum-based wall paintings in the Ateni Sioni church in Georgia. Due to the gypsum sensitivity to water, it was important to reduce the water content of the grout; this was achieved by partially substituting water with an alternative liquid, i.e. ethanol. The grout mixture design involved laboratory testing to assess the working properties and some performance characteristics of the grouts. In addition to the regular tests, grouts were injected into replicas simulating the challenging horizontal delamination present in the vaults of the church. The research proposes gypsum as the binder for a grout together with the use of a water-reduced dispersion medium, aiming to stabilise delaminated gypsum-based plasters.
