Abstract:Soon after carbon nanotubes were discovered by Iijima (Nature, 1991), we proposed (Nature, 1992) that inorganic layered compounds, likeWS2, are unstable in the planar form in the nanorange. Under proper chemical conditions, this inherent instability leads to folding of the layers and formation of hollow closed‐cage structures, that is, nanotubes (INT) and fullerene‐like (IF) nanoparticles. Given the elastic energy of the bending, formation of these closed‐cage nanostructures is pending on providing enough ener… Show more

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
