Inpatient Care Costs of COVID-19 in South Africa’s Public Healthcare System

Abstract: Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has had a devastating impact globally, with severe health and economic consequences. To prepare health systems to deal with the pandemic, epidemiological and cost projection models are required to inform budgets and efficient allocation of resources. This study estimates daily inpatient care costs of COVID-19 in South Africa, an important input into cost projection and economic evaluation models. Methods: We adopted a micro-costing approach, which involved the id… Show more

“…Services for patients with NCDs including diabetes are increasingly important in South Africa and across Africa given rising prevalence rates, with management adversely affected by lockdown and other measures (Godman et al, 2020 ; Kluge et al, 2020 ). The pandemic has also increased daily costs for hospitalized patients (Edoka et al, 2021 ). The burden on the South African healthcare system is further confounded by the recent emergence of the Omicron variant, being more transmissible and partially resistant to existing vaccines (Torjesen, 2021 ).…”

“…Input parameters for a model-based analysis of COVID-19 vaccination in South Africa. The range of ICU care costs includes the cost (from Edoka et al53 ) applied in a repeat of several of the main analyses. c In the base case, we model a vaccination program based on characteristics of the Johnson & Johnson/Janssen Ad26.COV2.S vaccine4 .…”

“…The last limitation was the lack of local data for relative risks for weight-related diseases and the exclusion of other weight-related diseases such as the corona virus disease (COVID-19). Current studies have shown that overweight and obese people are more susceptible to COVID-19 [ 13 , 14 ], significantly increasing costs of ICU and hospitalization [ 77 ]. Lack of detailed information on this condition therefore did not allow for such considerations.…”
