Insect pheromone-like activity of several isoprenoids against Phyllonorycter ringoniella (Matsumura)

Abstract: We field-assayed the pheromone-like activity of farnesol and its homologs epoxygeraniol and epoxyfarnesol to the apple leafminer moth, Phyllonorycter ringoniella. Results showed significant capture of apple leafminer moths at several time points for the epoxyfarnesol trap, but no such capture with the epoxygeraniol, farnesol, or ethanol traps. These findings suggest the possible use of epoxyfarnesol as an integrated control agent.

“…It action as pheromone for most insects, and as a natural pesticide for termites [25], shows its role in the protection of this mushroom from termites and other insects. The use of Farnesol to emphasize the aroma of perfumes is based on its activity as a co-solvent that regulates the volatility of the component aromas of perfumes, [17], while its antibacterial property makes it a potential deodorant in cosmetic products [26].…”

“…The main products of JH pathway are the two key hormones methyl farnesoate (MF), synthesized by JH acid O‐methyltransferase ( jhamt ), and JH, synthesized via MF epoxidase ( cyp15a1 ) (Li et al., 2013) (Figure 6). MF is the immediate precursor of JH (Nagaki et al., 2009) and has been detected in at least five orders of insects (Teal et al., 2014). Special emphasis should therefore be placed on jhamt gene activity, which is crucial to the production of these two hormones.…”
