Insecticidal Constituents from the Argentine Liverwort Plagiochila bursata

Abstract: The new 2,3-secoaromadendrane 1, together with the known compounds plagiochilines A and M (2 and 3, resp.), fusicogigantone A (4), and 1,4-dimethylazulene (5) were isolated from an Argentine collection of the liverwort Plagiochila bursata. Structures were elucidated by extensive 1D- and 2D-NMR studies. Compounds 2 and 4, incorporated to the larval diet at 100 microg per g of diet, reduced the larval growth of Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) by 66+/-29% and 25+/-8% and produced 55 and 75% larval … Show more

“…This is the first report on the insecticidal activity of fusicogigantone B ( 5 ). Compound 5 , at 100 ppm, affected the growth of S. frugiperda larvae, producing a high rate of mortality, similar to that reported for fusicogigantone A ( 7 ) …”

“…In recent years, a number of novel components have been isolated and purified from plants and have a variety of biological activities [15,16], many of which can be used as lead compounds for drug development [17,18]. Sesquiterpene is a kind of the most abundant substance existing in the plant essential oils which often have a strong odor and may protect themselves from animals, insects and parasites [19,20]. Due to this, these essential oils can be used in insecticide application or fragrance developments.…”

“…Plagiochiline A (196) is an ent-secoaromadendrane-type sesquiterpene hemiacetal which was isolated from Plagiochila species [71][72][73] that showed cytotoxic activity against P-388 murine leukemia tumor cells, 74 KB cells 75 and which exhibited strong antifeedant activity against the African army worm Spodoptera exempta. 76 Plagiochiline C (198) showed signicant antiplatelet effects on the arachidonate and collagen induced aggregations of washed rabbit platelets.…”
