Insecticidal effect of nanoencapsulated essential oils from Zanthoxylum rhoifolium (Rutaceae) in Bemisia tabaci populations

Abstract: a b s t r a c tThe purpose of this study was to develop and characterize biodegradable nanospheres containing essential oils from Zanthoxylum rhoifolium leaves and evaluate its insecticidal effect in Bemisia tabaci populations. The essential oil from Z. rhoifolium leaves exhibited an average yield of 0.03% and presented ␤-elemene (31.26%), D-germacrene (18.16%), ␤-caryophyllene (12.09%), ␦-elemene (7.63%), ␤-cedrene (6.69%), bicyclogermacrene (4.57%) and E-caryophyllene (3.63%) as main components. The PCL nano… Show more

“…It can be used to prepare novel formulations, such as insecticides, pesticides, and insect repellants (Khoobdel et al ; Owolade & Ogunleti ; Barik et al ; Gajbhiye et al ; Goswami et al ). The nanoparticles made by Christofoli et al () with Zanthoxylum rhoifolium 's EO had better protection against degradation and oxidation processes under sunlight and heat conditions. The necessary concentration of the applied doses and environmental impact would be reduced when this new formulation is used (Christofoli et al ).…”

“…Among various investigated plants, the Zanthoxylum genus stands out for its extracts and essential oils exhibited insecticidal, fungicidal, antibacterial, and fumigant activities [16,19,22]. Here, we first report repellent activities of six Zanthoxylum species including Z. armatum, Z. dimorphophyllum, Z. dimorphophyllum var.…”

“…Also, Zanthoxylum species have a folklore history in the treatment of various diseases, such as inflammation [15], toothache, lumbago [16], ascarid infection [17], sickle-cell anaemia, and malaria. Literatures have also shown that Zanthoxylum species possess a potential antiinsect [7,18,19], antimicrobial [20], antibacterial [21], and antifungal [22] activities.…”
