“…All of the models show areas of low suitability for C. hominivorax in the Amazon region, suggesting that this region cannot be adequately occupied by the species. This result is consistent with the observations that C. hominivorax preferentially inhabits areas at the forest edge, where adults feed, rest and mate, and grazing areas, where females seek hosts to lay their eggs [76-79]. Even though, this species appears to have crossed this Amazon area in the warming period, when forests might have expanded [4,80]; thus the hypothesized corridors suggested by Silva and Bates [9] do not seem to explain the observed distribution pattern.…”

“…These results further support the hypothesis that the Caribbean Sea is a geographic barrier to gene ßow in the screwworm. As Ciro Redondo showed the lowest variability indices, we suppose that this could be a result of the effective suppression program in the Isla de la Juventud (Garcia et al 2007) that occurred just before collecting the samples analyzed here. The suppression may have induced a population bottleneck that explains the low variability found.…”

“…The Amazon rain forest represents this putative geographic barrier. Because the screwworm inhabits the interface between savannah and forest borders (Thomas 1993, Phillips et al 2004, Garcia et al 2007, processes involved in this forest fragmentation and recover (Clapperton 1993, Haffer andPrance 2001) might be responsible for the observed geographic structure of screwworm populations.…”

“…Screwworms have been eradicated from the United States, Mexico, and Central America using SIT as part of a comprehensive approach (Wyss 2000). Panama was declared screwworm-free in 2006 and a buffer zone of 30,000 km 2 was established at the Darien Gap by the weekly release of 25Ð50 million sterile males (Garcia et al 2007). Estimated annual producer beneÞts in the United States, Mexico and Central America exceed 1 billion dollars (VargasÐTeran et al 2005).…”
