Insecticide resistance status in Culex quinquefasciatus in Benin

Abstract: BackgroundCulex quinquefasciatus, an arboviral and filarial vector, is present year round in several cities of the Republic of Benin. There is more information on the resistance status to malaria vectors compared to Culicines. It is therefore unfortunate that the international focus is on Anopheles control and not so much done against Cx. quinquefasciatus, a rather more resilient mosquito to many insecticides that deserves attention. The present study aims to assess the resistance status of Cx. quinquefasciatu… Show more

“…The high resistance among Aedes mosquito populations can be attributed to the prolonged use of these insecticides in controlling mosquitoes domestically, such as with sprays, coils and long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs). Pyrethroids have also been widely used in agriculture [35–38]. The frequent use of insecticides for vector control has led to increasing concerns over the development of insecticide resistance of these vectors on the environment and human health, which can compromise vector control strategies.…”

“…quinquefasciatus larvae hang at an angle to the surface of the water. The collection of larvae was carried out as described by Yadouléton et al, (2015). First instar larvae of mosquito larvae was collected from stagnant water from a compound in the University of Jos students' Village Hostel.…”

“…Mosquito-transmitted diseases remain a major cause of the loss of human life worldwide with more than 700 million people suffering from the diseases annually (Taubes, 1997). C. quinquefasciatus (Diptera: Culicidae) is widelydistributed in tropical and subtropical areas and is the most important vector of filarialparasite Wuchereria bancrofti, although Anopheles gambiae s.l and An.…”
