Insects as food and medicine: a sustainable solution for global health and environmental challenges

Abstract: Insects are a significant source of food for millions of people worldwide. Since ancient times, insects in medicine have been contributing to the treatment of diseases in humans and animals. Compared to conventional animal farming, the production of insects for food and feed generates significantly less greenhouse gas emissions and uses considerably less land. Edible insects provide many ecosystem services, including pollination, environmental health monitoring, and the decomposition of organic waste materials… Show more

“…The use of artificial diets has contributed to the determination and comparison of biological parameters of different insects in a standardised way. Studies using artificial diets to feed these organisms help maintain populations, mass production of insects for studies with natural enemies and insecticide products, studies of biology and ecology, and even a sustainable font for human food and medicine (Aidoo et al 2023;Cohen 2015;Parra 2009;Schneider 2009). a Silva et al (1968).…”

“…Novel foods including edible insects are categorised as food or ingredients that had not been consumed by humans within the European Union before May 15th, 1997, as specified by European Union legislation (Pali-Schöll et al, 2019;Imathiu, 2020). Insects are intriguing as ingredients in food and feed because they are resource-efficient, have a circular economy, and can combat climate change (Gasco et al, 2020;Aidoo et al, 2023). The antiquated food and feed rules that cover the usage of insects are a hindrance to this industry's expansion.…”
