Insight into MAS: A Molecular Tool for Development of Stress Resistant and Quality of Rice through Gene Stacking

Abstract: Rice yield is subjected to severe losses due to adverse effect of a number of stress factors. The most effective method of controlling reduced crop production is utilization of host resistance. Recent technological advances have led to the improvement of DNA based molecular markers closely linked to genes or QTLs in rice chromosome that bestow tolerance to various types of abiotic stresses and resistance to biotic stress factors. Transfer of several genes with potential characteristics into a single genotype i… Show more

“…Sequence analysis has been used as a great tool in the genetic analysis of plant species under control or disease conditions (Alberts et al, 2002;Prida et al, 2012;Qin et al, 2014;Das et al, 2017). The hybrid rice breeding system has contributed greatly to the production of rice, which is one of the most important grain crops Supplementary Table S1: Primers for RT-PCR analysis…”

“…Improved molecular marker technologies may enable bean breeders and geneticists to speed up cultivar development. An important intermediate step in this direction is to transfer desirable QTLs (genes) into active breeding populations using MAS-and to transfer multiple traits through gene pyramiding (Das et al 2017). Progress has been made in applying MAS toward improved resistance and it is described by Miklas et al (2006) and Tryphone et al (2013).…”

“…In addition, two more factors limiting the use of markerassisted selection in plant breeding are the equipment and consumables. These two are required to establish and maintain a molecular marker laboratory and therefore, their costs should be considered [7,121]. Development of markers also requires large initial costs and should be put into consideration.…”
