Insight Into Microbial Applications for the Biodegradation of Pyrethroid Insecticides

Abstract: Pyrethroids are broad-spectrum insecticides and presence of chiral carbon differentiates among various forms of pyrethroids. Microbial approaches have emerged as a popular solution to counter pyrethroid toxicity to marine life and mammals. Bacterial and fungal strains can effectively degrade pyrethroids into non-toxic compounds. Different strains of bacteria and fungi such as Bacillus spp., Raoultella ornithinolytica, Psudomonas flourescens , Brevibacte… Show more

“…Carboxylesterase enzyme is produced by the microorganism that specifically cleaves a carboxylate bond [44,45]. This cleavage transforms parent pesticide into the smaller molecular weight compound containing a carboxylic acid or alcohol that further oxidizes and dehydrogenates to yield less toxic or non-toxic compounds [46,47]. It is worth noting that the D-cyphenothrin degradation products are non-toxic to the environment.…”

“…Cypermethrin ((±)-α-cyano-3-phenoxybenzyl (±)-cis-trans3-(2,2-dichlorovinyl)-2,2-dimethylcyclo propanecarboxylate) is a synthetic pyrethroid that is commonly used against agricultural and household pests. Pyrethroids are applied worldwide to protect crop fields against insects and enhance agricultural production [1,2]. Pyrethroids also play a crucial role in the control of household insects, especially mosquitoes [3].…”

“…They also generate highly toxic compounds during the degradation process (Manickam et al, 2006;Usman et al, 2014;Dominguez et al, 2018a,b;Jung et al, 2018;Huang et al, 2019). However, the microbial degradation of lindane contamination is attracting increasing attention as a less expensive and more environmentally friendly alternative to conventional treatment methods Arora et al, 2017;Bajaj et al, 2017;Cycoń et al, 2017;Zhang H. et al, 2018;Bhatt et al, 2019a). The first report regarding the microbial degradation of lindane was published in 1967.…”
