Insight into the Impact of Oxidative Stress on the Barrier Properties of Lipid Bilayer Models

Abstract: As a new field of oxidative stress-based therapy, cold physical plasma is a promising tool for several biomedical applications due to its potential to create a broad diversity of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS). Although proposed, the impact of plasma-derived RONS on the cell membrane lipids and properties is not fully understood. For this purpose, the changes in the lipid bilayer functionality under oxidative stress generated by an argon plasma jet (kINPen) were investigated by electrochemical tec… Show more

“…The oxidative degradation of FenD was monitored using high-resolution ESI-MS(–) ( Figure A9 ). Polyene unsaturated double bonds underwent reactions in the presence of • O and • OH (hydroxylation and dihydroxylation), • OOH and O 2 (epoxidation), and 1 O 2 (to form allylic hydroperoxides) [ 19 , 61 , 66 ]. Both FenH ( m/z 418.25) and FenD ( m/z 390.24) were oxidized with longer plasma treatment (>20 s).…”

“…The alteration of plasma phospholipid levels 2 weeks after completion of doxorubicin treatment exhibited different patterns between HER2-positive and HER2-negative breast cancer patients. Since systemic oxidative stress leads to the modification of phospholipids [ 53 55 ], the different patterns of plasma phospholipid changes between these two groups of patients were likely due to the different changes in systemic oxidative stress. Interestingly, we found a strong correlation between the decrease in plasma phosphatidylglycerol levels and an increase in LF/HF ratio 2 weeks after completion of doxorubicin treatment in HER2-negative breast cancer patients, suggesting a critical role of phosphatidylglycerol in the regulation of heart rate variability.…”

“…Changes in altitude will alter the accumulation of secondary metabolites in plant tissues, thereby adjusting the adaptability of plants to environmental changes [53]. The increase of reactive oxygen species in high-altitude areas can damage the cell membrane system, resulting in abnormal metabolism, and even cell death [36,54]. The antioxidant activity of medicinal plants is commonly evaluated by the scavenging rate of DPPH radicals and ABTS radicals [55].…”
