“…The absolute abundances of ARGs exhibited a 4-order-of-magnitude variation, ranging from 2.7 × 10 5 to 5.0 × 10 9 copies g –1 sediment (Figure b). The ARGs in the OLS LP were highly enriched with an average of 2.5 × 10 9 copies g –1 sediment, and the OLS AI also showed significantly higher abundance (mean 5.6 × 10 7 copies g –1 sediment, p < 0.05) than NOLS FP (Figures d and S7), comparable to those in estuary sediments along the coast of China, pig farms, and paddy . However, the NOLS FP and NOLS MP showed much lower ARG abundances.…”

“…A much higher detection frequency for ARGs occurred in the OLS LP (46.08%) and OLS AI (10.32%) compared with the NOLS MP (2.95%) and NOLS FP (2.69%). Compared with the OLS AI , the OLS LP was strongly subjected to penguin guano input. , Hence, the detection frequency in the OLS LP was significantly higher ( p < 0.05) than that in the OLS AI , even slightly higher than that in pig farms, sewage, and river water samples (Figure S1). Furthermore, the detection frequency in the NOLS was similar to that in the Antarctic soils in proximity to research stations .…”
