Instant Mercury Ion Detection in Industrial Waste Water with a Microchip Using Extended Gate Field-Effect Transistors and a Portable Device

Abstract: Mercury ion selective membrane (Hg-ISM) coated extended gate Field Effect transistors (ISM-FET) were used to manifest a novel methodology for ion-selective sensors based on FET’s, creating ultra-high sensitivity (−36 mV/log [Hg2+]) and outweighing ideal Nernst sensitivity limit (−29.58 mV/log [Hg2+]) for mercury ion. This highly enhanced sensitivity compared with the ion-selective electrode (ISE) (10−7 M) has reduced the limit of detection (10−13 M) of Hg2+ concentration’s magnitude to considerable orders irre… Show more

“…Moreover, the sensor had good specificity towards Hg 2+ even in complex matrices. Later, they constructed Hg-ISHEMT sensors with a user interface that could estimate the concentration of Hg 2+ in an unknown solution [ 206 ]. Interestingly, the response time of this sensor was observed to be further improved up to 5 min, compared to previous Hg-ISHEMT sensor response time (~10 min).…”

“…There are limited articles available on the detection of Pb [ 31 ] and Hg [ 91 ] in drinking water using DGISFETs. Recently An et al [ 92 ] reported detection of Hg using graphene aptasensor on flexible PEN substrates with a detection limit of 10 pM.…”

“…With the widespread use of pesticides and fertilizers, some toxic small molecules and heavy metal ions such as bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), nitrite, and Hg 2+ are unavoidable. Several studies have demonstrated those molecules and ions are serious threats to human health and the environment [48,49,50]. Sensitive detections for these toxic substances have been achieved by using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS), inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer, and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with UV and diode array detectors [51,52,53,54,55].…”
