Conventional adhesives generally suffer from diminished adhesion in aqueous environments, posing significant challenges for their application in wet and submerged conditions. While extensive research efforts are directed toward enhancing the interfacial bonding, cohesive strength, and durability of adhesives in such environments, most existing underwater adhesives remain static and irreversible. This limitation hinders their reusability and often results in undesirable residues. Addressing the challenge of achieving strong underwater adhesion with on‐demand detachment remains crucial. This study introduces the development of temperature‐responsive underwater adhesives that demonstrate outstanding bonding strength, reversibility, and durability. Through the strategic integration of interfacial bonding, reinforced cross‐linking networks, dynamic hydrogen bonds, and upper critical solution temperature (UCST)‐driven phase transitions, one of the few temperature‐deactivated adhesives is created. The optimized adhesive is distinguished by its performance to achieve underwater adhesion strengths exceeding 1.4 MPa, nearly 100% switching efficiency and residue‐free adherend under mild thermal cycling. Beyond the template‐assisted fabrication of adhesive patches, 3D printable adhesives are achieved with programmable architectures via direct ink‐writing. This work highlights the development of temperature‐deactivated underwater adhesives activated by UCST‐type phase transitions, not only boosting adhesion strengths and switching efficiencies across various water conditions but also broadening their applicability with user‐defined and application‐specific functions.

Conventional adhesives experience reduced adhesion when exposed to aqueous environments. The development of underwater adhesives capable of forming strong and durable bonds across various wet substrates is crucial in biomedical and engineering domains. Nonetheless, limited emphasis placed on retaining high adhesion strengths in different saline environments, addressing challenges such as elevated osmotic pressure and spontaneous dimensional alterations. Herein, a series of ionogel‐based underwater adhesives are developed using a copolymerization approach that incorporates “dynamic complementary cross‐linking” networks. Synergistic engineering of building blocks, cross‐linking networks, pendant groups and counterions within ionogels ensures their adhesion and cohesion in brine spanning a wide salinity range. A high adhesion strength of ≈3.6 MPa is attained in freshwater. Gratifyingly, steady adhesion strengths exceeding 3.3 MPa are retained in hypersaline solutions with salinity ranging from 50 to 200 g kg−1, delivering one of the best‐performing underwater adhesives suitable for diverse saline solutions. A combination of outstanding durability, reliability, deformation resistance, salt tolerance, and self‐healing properties showcases the “self‐contained” underwater adhesion. This study shines light on the facile fabrication of catechol‐free ionogel‐based adhesives, not merely boosting adhesion strengths in freshwater, but also broadening their applicability across various saline environments.

Structured light projection using image guide fibers for in situ photo-biofabrication

Light-based biofabrication techniques have revolutionized the field of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Specifically, the projection of structured light, where the spatial distribution of light is controlled at both macro- and micro-scale, has enabled precise fabrication of complex three-dimensional structures with high resolution and speed. However, despite almost two decades of progress, biofabrication processes have been mostly limited to benchtop devices which limit the flexibility in terms of where the fabrication can occur. Here, we demonstrate a Fiber-assisted Structured Light (FaSt-Light) projection apparatus for rapid in situ crosslinking of photoresins. This approach uses image-guide fiber bundles which can project bespoke images at multiple wavelengths, enabling flexibility and spatial control of different photoinitiation systems and crosslinking chemistries and also the location of fabrication. We demonstrate coupling of different sizes of fibers and different lenses attached to the fibers to be able to project small (several mm) or large (several cm) images for material crosslinking. FaSt-Light allows control over the cross-section of the crosslinked resins and enables the introduction of microfilaments which can further guide cellular infiltration, differentiation and anisotropic matrix production. The proposed approach could lead to a new range of in situ biofabrication techniques which improve the translational potential of photo-fabricated tissues and grafts.
