Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) have been established as standard devices for automation and process control since the 1990s. Although a lot of research work has been done on the field of controller modeling and verification, it is still daily practice that control software is manually developed without applying formal validation methods. On the other hand, controller modeling is often seen detached from the plant or its model, i.e. as an open loop. The results of analysis of open-loop controller behavior give very little or almost no indications of the correct behavior of the closed-loop system. The contribution therefore proposes an approach to generate formal models out of PLC code. These controller models enable formal verification of the closed loop in combination with a specification. Due to the year of publication, all solution approaches are based on the syntax definition of the IEC 61131-3, which is not fulfilled by every industrial PLC vendor. Therefore, this contribution will show a way to use the defined xml formats of the Technical Committee 6 of the PLCopen as input for the formal model generation.

Ladder Diagram (LD) is the most used programming language for Programmable Logical Controllers (PLCs). A PLC is a special purpose industrial computer used to automate industrial processes. Bugs in LD programs are very costly and sometimes are even a threat to human safety. We propose a model driven approach for formal verification of LD programs through model-checking. We provide a metamodel for a subset of the LD language. We define a time Petri net (TPN) semantics for LD programs through an ATL model transformation. Finally, we automatically generate behavioral properties over the LD models as LTL formulae which are then checked over the generated TPN using the modelcheckers available in the Tina toolkit. We focus on race condition detection.

The acceptance of formal methods in industry is a challenging task mainly due to difficult learning process and the lack of the tools and methods helping control engineer to interpret the results of formal verification procedure. We model existing source code ofthe controller and controller related information (controller model) along with controlled object (plant model) and verify modeled system by means ofmodel-checking.This paper focuses on the issues related to controller and plant modeling. Ladder logic modeling is discussed along with the problems related to the plant modeling.
