Instructional guides for filming infant movements at home are effective for the General Movements Assessment

Abstract: Aim To determine the effectiveness of two instructional guides to obtain video recordings for the General Movements Assessment (GMA). Methods A cross‐sectional study of a community sample of family participants with low‐risk term newborn infants recruited via social media and randomly allocated to receive one of two instructional guides (detailed or quick versions) to film their infant's movements at home. Participants returned videos via a secure Research Electronic Database Capture link and videos were score… Show more

“…A recent review by Silva et al 18 highlighted the fact that adoption of automated CP prediction in clinical practice has been restricted because existing machine learning methods lack the predictive accuracy of the GMA. The feasibility of home-based smartphone recordings 22 , 44 , 45 , 46 , 47 and associated infant motion tracking 37 may be combined with the proposed deep learning method to obtain a fully automated system for clinical decision support.…”

“…A follow-up by phone at 6 weeks’ age was added to reduce attrition and a telephone contact was made in most cases at the time of filming. Kwong et al in Australia and a small pilot study in India recently demonstrated that simple instructions for filming could be used to achieve good results with remote GMA where no dedicated app is available 32 33. However, video file transfer methods would need to comply with local data security and transfer laws 15…”

“…Our findings are partly contradictory to a recent Danish study, which found that smartphone-aided remote GMA increased parents’ sense of control during developmental follow-up [ 28 ]. Some participants in Nepal also questioned the need to learn a separate app, and a recent study from Australia found that even fairly simple instructions can help parents to correctly film their child at home using a smartphone camera and a messaging app [ 13 ]. A small pilot from India suggests that this can also be done in middle-income settings [ 29 ].…”
