Instrument development for health belief model constructs

Abstract: Research was conducted to develop valid and reliable scales to test the Health Belief Model (HBM). The dependent variable chosen for scale development was frequency of breast self-examination. Independent variables were constructs related to the HBM: susceptibility, seriousness, benefits, barriers, and health motivation. Analyses for construct validity and theory testing included factor analysis and multiple regression. Chronbach Alpha and Pearson r were used to compute reliabilities. Scales that were judged v… Show more

“…Champion developed and validated a scale in 1984 (Champion's Health Belief Model Scale -CHBMS), consisting of 36 items to measure perceived susceptibility to breast cancer, as well as perceived benefits and barriers to BS (Champion, 1984). In 1999, Champion revised CHBMS for Mammography Screening (CHBMS-MS), excluding the breast self-examination used in the original studies, showing significant correlation between mammography compliance and high scores in the susceptibility and benefit subscales, whereas perceived barriers were associated with lower screening compliance (Huaman, Kamimura-Nishimura, Kanamori, Siu & Lescano, 2011).…”

“…The scale was originally developed by Champion in 1984and revised in 1993, 1997(Champion and Scott, 1997, and lastly in 1999, to assess health beliefs concerning breast self examination and mammography screening among participants (Champion et al, 1999). Citing the lack of a reliable and valid tool for measuring HBM concepts, Champion sought to develop a tool using reliable and valid scales for use in research (Champion et al, 1984).…”

“…Citing the lack of a reliable and valid tool for measuring HBM concepts, Champion sought to develop a tool using reliable and valid scales for use in research (Champion et al, 1984). The key concepts of CHBM include perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefits, perceived barriers, confidence, and self-efficacy (Champion and Scott, 1997;Champion et al, 1993).…”

“…The scale was applied in different populations but mostly in breast cancer and Western cultures (Champion, 1984;1999). The CHBMS has been used extensively in different studies (Watts et al, 2003;Wu and Yu, 2003;Ozsoy et al, 2007;Taymoori and Berry, 2009;Medina-Shepherd and Kleier, 2010;Nergiz-Eroglu and Kilic, 2011;Baysal and Polat, 2012;Erbil and Bölükbaş, 2012;Fouladi et al, 2013;Tastan et al, 2013;Yilmaz et al, 2013).…”
