Instrumented BASFI (iBASFI) Shows Promising Reliability and Validity in the Assessment of Activity Limitations in Axial Spondyloarthritis

Abstract: The proof-of-concept iBASFI showed promising reliability and validity in measuring activity capacity. The number of the iBASFI's PBM may be minimized, but further validation in larger axSpA cohorts is needed before its clinical use.

“…However, in several cases, we opted for a repeated activity, to minimize the impact of single-trial variability and to be able to judge possible changes within one sequence. Although the repetition does not correspond to free-living behavior, it has been shown to yield more clinically-valid measures than a single execution [7]. Additionally, the patients were required to perform the activities as quickly as possible, to avoid differences due to the self-selected execution speed.…”

“…To overcome these shortcomings, our research group recently proposed a sensor-based objective approach to reliably and validly replace the hand-held chronometer during performance-based tests in a clinical environment [7]. Indeed, with the advent of relatively inexpensive inertial measurement units (IMUs), the objective measurement of activity is now possible, both in the clinical environment and in a patient’s real-life setting.…”

“…Content validity is good because patients were involved in developing the items. Additionally, the instrumented BASFI, in which an accelerometer is used to capture performance‐based measures of the items of the BASFI, helps demonstrate the face validity of the individual components of the BASFI (73). On the other hand, Roussou and Sultana (74) suggested in 2010 that not all of the key areas of importance to patients in functional capacity are captured in the BASFI.…”
