Instruments to measure outcomes of post-intensive care syndrome in outpatient care settings – Results of an expert consensus and feasibility field test

Abstract: Background There is no consensus on the instruments for diagnosis of post-intensive care syndrome (PICS). We present a proposal for a set of outcome measurement instruments of PICS in outpatient care. Methods We conducted a three-round, semi-structured consensus-seeking process with medical experts, followed each by exploratory feasibility investigations with intensive care unit survivors (n1 = 5; n2 = 5; n3 = 7). Fourteen participants from nine stakeholder groups participated in the first and second consensus… Show more

“…Subjects were asked to gradually increase their muscle force to a maximum effort which had to be sustained for 6 s. The highest performance was considered for analysis. Grip strength varies with age and sex: strength ≥ 25 kg in men ≤ 60 years and ≥ 23 kg in men between 61 and 79 years or strength ≥ 14 kg in women ≤ 60 years and ≥ 13 kg in women between 61 and 79 years are considered normal [ 19 ]. Maximal isometric quadriceps strength was measured with a MicroFET2 hand-held dynamometer (Hoggan Indiustries, Inc., West Jordan, UT, USA), with the patient lying in supine position.…”

“…With the increased call for patient-centered focus in clinical research ( 31 ), trialists should formally incorporate the perspectives of patients and families/caregivers and patient comfort into the design of clinical trials of ICU sedation. Since posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, and other mental illnesses occur in the caregivers as well as ICU survivors, it is important to include both of these groups in a panel that is involved in all aspects of the clinical trial ( 33 , 34 ).…”

“…Quality of life, health status and performance in activities of daily living will be assessed using the Barthel-Index and an adapted version of the PROMIS®-29 Profile at discharge, six weeks, three months, six months and 12 months after inclusion. In addition, lung function, blood gases, cardiac function, renal function, occurrence of Post-Intensive Care Syndrome, neuropsychiatric function, exercise capacity and cognitive function will be assessed in selected patient groups at follow-up visits [24].…”
