Insulin‐dependent diabetic microangiopathy in the inner ear

Abstract: Thickening of the basement membrane in capillaries is implicated in the microangiopathic complications of diabetes mellitus. This study was designed to evaluate microangiopathic changes of the inner ear associated with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) and concurrent moderate-intensity noise exposure. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were injected with streptozotocin (65 mg/kg) to induce IDDM. Half of the control and diabetic animals were exposed to chronic noise of 95 dB over the 6-month study period. “…In autopsies of diabetic patients, Makishima and Tanaka 23 carried out a histopathology study of the temporal bones and found alterations, especially in the peripheral nerves, characterized by fibrous thickening and narrowing of the stria vascularis vessel lumen. The same histological findings were found by Smith et al 24 studying diabetic rats. Bachor et al 25 , also doing histological studies of temporal bones, concluded that, in some cases the inner ear vascular variation can be associated with hearing alterations.…”

“…It was Jordao who in 1857 noticed a connection between hearing loss and diabetes mellitus in a patient with diabetic coma (acc. to [3]). Within the compass of years many authors proved different kinds of inner ear impairment, both in humans as well as in animals with diabetes induced experimentally [3,4,5,6,7].…”

There are sparse and often inconsistent data concerning the influence of different metabolic disturbances present in diabetes on vestibular organ.…”
