Insulin dysregulation in horses with induced obesity

Abstract: Insulin deregulation (ID) is a central player in the pathophysiology of equine metabolic syndrome (EMS), which is associated with generalized and/or regional obesity. The objective of this experiment was to characterize the alterations in the hormonal profile in horses exposed to a hypercaloric diet. A total of nine Mangalarga Marchador adult horses with initial body condition score (BCS) of 2.9±1/9 (mean±SD) were submitted to a high calorie grain-rich diet for 5 months. The data was collected before the start… Show more

“…The MM horses that received high concentrations of NSCs had lesions in the lamellar tissue, unsurprising since hormonal imbalances were previously identified [ 16 , 18 , 23 , 24 ]. The lesions included abnormal keratinization of the abaxial border of several PDLs, PEL discontinuities, and condensed nuclei of SELBCs with loss of their orientation perpendicular to the BM.…”

“…Insulin dysregulation develops in many horses due to obesity [ 44 , 51 , 52 , 53 , 54 , 55 ], likely via mechanisms described above. Diets high in starch and sugar have also been demonstrated to decrease insulin sensitivity, even in leaner animals [ 56 , 57 ].…”
