“…In Anopheles sp., ILP5 was found in both sexes, weakly expressed in the head and thorax but abundant in abdomen (Krieger et al, 2004). In the molluscs, the NCS of the ganglia are the primary source of ILP expression (Ebberink et al, 1989;Rusakov et al, 2003;Wu and Brown, 2006).…”

“…Considering that function has only been directly investigated in insects, the most evolutionary advanced of the ILP7 orthologue species represented here, it may be that Sv-ILP1, as an ILP7 orthologue, serves a more obvious function in the crustaceans, as with the molluscs where it has been suggested that ILPs serve as hybrids, encompassing the functions of modern day insulin and IGF-I (Rusakov et al, 2003). One hypothesis is the action of Sv-ILP1 in the mediation of gut contraction, oscillating with the circadian rhythms involved in digestion; in A. stephensi ILP5 was the ILP most significantly up-regulated after feeding (Marquez et al, 2011).…”

“…It also remains open whether the antibody is to be expected to cross react with one, a few or all isoforms of MIP in a particular species such as P. nuntia. As experience shows is the use of polychaete antibodies in cross-species experiments limited (Rusakov et al, 2003).…”

“…A physiological function of MIPs as growth hormones was hypothesized. Besides bombyxins from the lepidopteran Bombyx mori (Kawakami et al, 1989) and a locust insulin-related peptide (LIRP) from Locusta migratoria and other insects (Laqueux et al, 1990), MIPs are the third member of the insulin superfamily which have been structurally identified in invertebrates (Rusakov et al, 2003). Insulin-like peptides occur in geologically old invertebrate lineages and are suggested to have evolved to mammalian insulins and insulin-like growth factors (IGFs).…”
