Intake and digestibility of natural feeds by roe-deer

Abstract: The investigations of the intake and digestibility of natural feeds in the year cycle were carried out by the balance method on 3 individuals of roe-deer, Capreolus capreolus. Season-depending changes in the chemical composition of natural food were ascertained: total protein amounted to 8-9°/o in winter and to 16-19°/o in summer, while the fibre content was the highest in winter feeds (30-47°/o). The food intake ranged from 350 g of dry matter in winter to 600 g d.m. in summer, these values corresponding to 1… Show more

“…In the average roe-deer weighing approximately 20 kg such amount of fat corresponds to approximately 10,000 kcal. Drożdż & Osiecki (1973) studied in roe-deer the consumption and digestibility of natural food in the winter period and found a poor digestibility of browse in this period. Assuming that no other food is then available, the daily deficite of energy consumption may reach 400 kcal.…”

“…The data on their energy metabolism are totally lacking, while the investigations on consumption and digestibility of natural food in this species were carried out in a rather narrow scope (Drożdż & Osiecki, 1973;Drożdż et al, 1975; E i s f e 1 d, 1974;Ellenberg, 1974). Energy metabolism was studied only in a few species of American deer, red deer and reindeer {e.g.…”
