In difficult drilling environments, a critical aspect for success is BHA design optimization in the pre-job phase. In previous operations, modeling and run simulations have proven valuable at helping operators improve drilling efficiency (reduce NPT; increase footage/day), produce high-quality log data and properly position the wellbore to increase contact with the reservoir. To further improve modeling accuracy/reliability, a dynamic modeling system was used for BHA analysis. The FEA (finite element analysis)-based system enables engineers to leverage the team's combined expertise and full suite of drilling tools to optimize a BHA for a specific application.Four criteria are used to evaluate BHA performance during simulations: stability; robustness/reliability; measurement quality; steerability. Simulations are run to determine each configuration's potential for axial, lateral/torsional vibration and identify the root cause and dominant mode. To ensure maximum BHA robustness, the loading on BHA components is mapped/rated allowing refinements to increase BHA service life and reduce the potential for costly NPT. Simulations are run to observe the potential for MWD/LWD tool deformation and sag angle to determine the adverse effect sensor motion could have on measurement quality. To mitigate steerability issues, build/walk tendencies are simulated to determine how the BHA will respond to steering command from RSS/PDM.A wide-range of factors can be considered in this procedure. Various cutting structures and steering tools are analyzed and modified as required. The type and location of BHA components are also modeled and re-positioned for optimization purposes. Various drilling scenarios and operating parameters are fed into the system including RPM/WOB, sliding/rotating time, back-reaming and rotating off bottom. Formation characteristics including rock types, friction factor, heterogeneity/homogeneity, degree/amount of interbedding can all be varied to investigate the BHA's corresponding directional implications and vibrational response.All potential BHA designs are evaluated under a set of pre-defined drilling scenarios. A comparative analysis is performed to investigate BHA responses against each specific criterion to identify the optimum BHA configuration. Operating conditions are analyzed for each BHA and an optimal parameter window of minimized BHA shock and vibration is generated with a range of RPM/WOB recommendations. The authors will present several conclusive case studies that document the method's effectiveness and cost reducing capabilities.

Downhole vibration is detrimental to drilling efficiency and can cause MWD/LWD tool failure, drillstring fatigue, bit/PDM damage. Preventing or mitigating BHA instability is critical to improve drilling efficiency, increase ROP and reduce drilling costs. To prevent dynamic instability requires an in-depth understanding of the BHA's downhole behavior in terms of the actual phenomenon and ability to determine root cause. Downhole RPM and vibration data sent to surface from MWD/LWD usually have very low frequency limited by telemetry. Because vibrations are measured at a distance from the bit, the data may not capture detailed bit behavior patterns. The low frequency data is typically used in combination with steady-state response or static analysis models developed to predict interaction between the drillstring and wellbore. Results produced by these type systems have been less than optimal. To obtain superior quality downhole vibration data, a high-frequency drilling dynamics measurement module (DDMM) was recently developed to capture and measure bit/BHA dynamic response. The authors will describe the application of the new module to measure and record downhole RPM, acceleration at bit/BHA at sampling frequencies up to 2048-Hz. Analysis verified the high-frequency data produces more specific details about dynamic behavior compared to standard data. The module can be positioned at any location within the BHA or directly above the bit. The high-frequency data is used in conjunction with a unique time-based dynamic simulation system to verify and confirm the modeling's prediction of ROP/RPM, acceleration and drillstring instability including stick-slip/whirl. When drilling dysfunction is observed, the time-based modeling system has the potential to ascertain the root cause not typically identified in measured data. This system approach is cost effective and can be highly effective at preventing or mitigating complex instability issues. Three DDMM field tests are presented that document the capability of the combined testing and modeling system approach to achieve better understanding of downhole dynamics: Case Study 1 Rotary BHA with one DDMM positioned at top of bit. Analysis of actual downhole data from DDMM shows large RPM variation at the bit which was confirmed by the time-based modeling system. The two data plots showed good correlation between axial/lateral acceleration (acceleration/g's vs time/sec). Case Study 2 Motor BHA with two DDMMs installed. One positioned at top of motor another at top of the bit. Analysis of actual data documents stick-slip at the bit and top of motor which is confirmed by the modeling system. Detailed analysis of the two data plots revealed good correlation between actual and modeled data with both depicting negative RPM at the top of the motor with increased acceleration at the occurrence of stick-slip (RPM vs time/sec). Case Study 3 Motor BHA with two DDMMs installed. One positioned at top of motor, another at top of bit. Analysis of actual data documents stick slip at the top of motor which was confirmed by the modeling system. Further analysis of the modeling data plot identified stick-slip coupled with BHA whirl. The case studies document accurate modeling predictions of ROP/RPM and acceleration corroborated by the measured data. Modeling also successfully predicted dynamic instability issues identified by actual DDMM measurement and gave specific details about coupling of stick-slip and BHA whirl not observed in the measured data.

Drill Bit Evolution During Execution of Long-Term Offshore ERD Project

Initial selection and further optimization of drill bits is one of the key factors of an effective drilling process, which is particularly important in high-cost projects. This article presents the incremental changes made to increase the ROP and mechanical efficiency of drill bits while drilling offshore extended-reach drilling (ERD) wells. With the implementation of the tasks based on a well-by-well analysis of bits, recommendations were developed for optimizing the design of drill bits. These recommendations were based on results of bit simulations in specialized software with correlation of proposed models and actual results. Simultaneous bit optimization was performed in conjunction with other elements of the BHA with the help of an integrated engineering analysis system. The result was the development of new bit designs and sizes designed for drilling specific rock in specific fields. In addition to the optimization of the drill bits themselves, a refined technological component was introduced: a real-time drillbit optimization system to enhance ROP, decrease bit wear while drilling, and ensure maximum run length via the optimization of drilling parameters. Application of the proposed technical and technological changes has increased ROP up to two times, and enabled a bit to drill a 4,900-m section in one run with minimum bit wear, leading to a reduction in the cost of the well. As a result, bits for ERD were optimized for each size, and a drilling parameters map was created. This map was updated based on the result of the construction of each well to ensure maximum efficiency with minimal bit wear during subsequent drilling. Additionally, one of the most important results was a 6-year record of no NPT associated with the drill bits. Experience gathered during the development of the bits using advanced modeling applications, together with real-time drilling optimization, will be applied on a nearby offshore field to minimize the time required to reach the optimal ROP. This article describes the selection, optimization, and continuous improvement of drill bits using the latest techniques and technologies, the use of which occurred gradually during development over several years. The above approaches can be applied to ERD and standard horizontal wells worldwide.
